For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God’s purpose at his appointed time. (1 Tim 2:5-6 NET)
Among the beauty of the garland, ornaments, and lights this Christmas season, it is helpful to take a step back and appreciate our habit of gift-giving. Though it could be easy to be cynical about gift-giving knowing our habit is reinforced by corporate advertising, it is still quite astounding that we spend our time and resources to provide a tangible display of thoughtfulness to those we care about this time of year.
During Advent I (Aaron) have had the opportunity to reflect on this passage (above) from 1 Timothy. Two words have stuck out to me: "gave himself." The one intermediary between the one God and humankind did not give a mere portion of all he had. The fully God and fully human one gave himself. He gave himself that we might be set free to enjoy... him. Whether we recognize it or not, he gave the gift that we need and want most. He gave himself.
In the midst of all the gifts given and received this Christmas, we pray God would help you to appreciate and experience the greatest gift of all, the love of God in Christ Jesus.
And may our work at Carmen House Christian Study Center be a gift of grace to the OSU campus community.
Carmen House Christian Study Center is able to come to fruition on the doorstep of Ohio State, because of the generous giving of our partners. Year-end gifts are beyond helpful as we move into 2025. We are so grateful for other’s generosity and interest in our work.
