Sometimes life can be so discouraging and disorienting that we just want something to brighten our moods. This is not all bad. There are certainly admonishments in the Bible to actively pursue and cultivate joy; we can be uplifted by hope in God’s promises. And yet, is it not also possible that looking at the “bright side” can also mean superficially avoiding the reality of pain and brokenness?
Good Friday is a day in the church calendar that beckons us not to look away. The torture and crucifixion of the Son of God on our behalf merits our heart’s prolonged attention before quickly jumping to the joy of resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Dylan Crosson, a PhD candidate in musicology at OSU, will be offering a talk on the possibility of retrieving how Christians have historically worshipped God on this Friday that we have called Good. This speaker series event has been placed in the late afternoon so that attendees might also considering attending a Good Friday worship service at a local Christian church of their choice later that evening.
4:30pm on Good Friday, April 18th.
